02 Nov What Is Post-Production? Editing, VFX, Colour and Sound Explained
The shoot is the part of a video that everyone sees, with the cameras, lights and crew. But the film your customers watch is shaped after the shoot, in post-production. This is where hours of footage become a 30-second TV commercial, a brand film or a set of social media reels. Here is what happens at each step, in plain language.
1. Editing
The editor watches every take, picks the best moments and puts them in order to tell the story. A first version, called the offline or rough cut, is shared with the brand for feedback on story and timing. After one or two rounds of changes the edit is locked, which means the timing will not change again. Locking the edit before the next steps saves time and money.
2. Visual effects (VFX) and motion graphics
VFX covers anything added or changed in the picture: removing wires or logos, replacing a sky, adding a product that was not on set, or building a full 3D scene. Motion graphics add animated text, logos and product information. VFX is priced by the number of shots and how complex they are, so it helps to plan these shots before the shoot.
3. Colour grading
Colour grading gives the film its look. The colourist matches shots filmed at different times so they feel like one scene, makes skin tones natural, brings out the product and sets a mood: warm and friendly, cool and premium, or bright and energetic. A good grade is one of the main differences between a video that looks expensive and one that looks home-made.
4. Sound design, music and voice-over
Sound is half of the experience on TV and YouTube. The sound team cleans up dialogue, adds effects such as footsteps, doors and product sounds, and mixes everything with the music and voice-over so it is clear at any volume. Brands can use licensed music or an original jingle written for them, which they then own. Voice-overs are often recorded in both Urdu and English.
5. Versions and delivery
The final step is preparing every version the campaign needs: 30, 15 and 6-second cuts, vertical 9:16 reels, square posts, subtitled versions and files in the exact format each TV channel or platform asks for. Listing these versions at the start of the project avoids last-minute work.
How long does post-production take?
For a typical TV commercial without heavy VFX, post-production usually takes one to three weeks, depending on how quickly feedback comes back. Projects with 3D animation or complex VFX take longer. The fastest projects are the ones where the brand gives clear, combined feedback at each stage instead of many small rounds.
Questions to ask your production house
- Is post-production done in-house, or sent to other studios?
